The constant growth of energy costs and the more and more restrictive standards on emissions are strongly steering the glass industry towards maximization of thermal recovery efficiency. The conversion to End Port is weighed up for every Unit Melter furnace by evaluating all involved burdensome changes in the layout, required by the installation of a chambered furnace. In the End Port furnaces the lack of technical space for chamber enlargement often involves the erection of multiple chambers and/or the need of a wider usage of electrical boosting as a source of heat.


Through an analysis of the air and waste gas temperature  trend in a regenerator, it can be observed that this works at a preheated air temperature lower then 800°C - compatible with metal exchangers - for the greatest part of its height (60% about).

It is subsequently possible to assume that an important part of the heat exchange system could be replaced by a simpler, cheaper and - namely - more flexible metal exchanger.

The Stara Glass patent is therefore about a hybrid regenerative/recuperative heat recovery system designed for the performance of a chamber funrnace ensuring several additional advantages:

- Lower use of refractory materials

- Lower overall vertical dimensions of regenerators

- Possibility of cleaning by mechanical means in  the condensation zone

- Decreasing of dead periods during inversion cycle.

Centauro is a new concept-based furnace offering better efficiency and cost-performance than both End Port and Unit Melter furnace. Furthermore, it provides a key solution to rebuild an existing furnace by minimizing  its erection costs and improving energy performance.

Keeping under control the costs of refractories and construction works, a UM furnace can be converted to Centauro by modulating the regenerator height and designing the metal recovery system layout according to the real needs of the plant.

Centauro allows to optimize thermal efficiency in EP furnaces with undersized chambers as well as to eliminate the second chamber in double-pass regenerative recovery systems and all relevant  problems about thermo-fluid dynamics.

The above advantages are not the only benefits ensured through the new Stara Glass technology.

SNCR (Selective non-catalytic reduction)
All Stara Glass hybrid heat recovery technologies, Centauro, Minotauro and Ciclope, can be dimensioned in order to achieve, in the duct leading waste gas from ceramic to metallic part, a temperature window which is compliant with the usage of a non-catalytic system for NOx abatement. This way, it is possible to face the more and more restrictive laws about nitrogen oxides industrial production avoiding the significant costs and plant complications that are related to the setup of a SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system.
